One day course

Who is the course for?

TOPSS induction standards recommend that Moving & Handling Training be done on induction, within 6 weeks of commencement of employment and that it take place over 1 day. Therefore these courses are aimed at new staff and those who have not had training for some time.

 

Aims of the course:

  • to provide candidates with the practical skills to move people with impaired mobility safely
  • to use moving & handling aids effectively

The day consists of:

  • spinal structure and function
  • the importance of posture and back care
  • current relevant legislation and professional guidelines


Assessment of risks:

  • of tasks
  • loads
  • the environment
  • the limits of individual capability
  • problem solving
  • practical handling strategies for clients with impaired mobility including the use of small
    pieces of equipment for transfers and bed movement and the use of hoists and the prescription of slings

How is learning assessed?

Participation, observation of techniques and the completion of risk assessments.

 

 

Manual Handling of People - Half Day Course

 

Who is the course for?

It is widely recommended that people handlers receive update training every 12 months (HSE 2004, Chartered society of Physiotherapists, National Back Exchange).

Half-day courses are aimed at staff that have previously received training.

These courses are updates. The manager of the organisation must be satisfied that previous training undertaken by the employee was adequate and that they are working to acceptable standards.

 

Aims of the course:

To refresh candidates skills ensuring the continuation of safer handling practices.

 

The course consists of:

  • Spinal structure
  • function and back care
  • current legislation and professional guidelines
  • risk assessment
  • practice using small pieces of equipment for transfers and bed movement
  • the use of hoists and the prescription of slings

How is learning assessed?

Participation, observation of techniques and the completion of risk assessments.
